Following the death of a 12-year old child, Ace singer, songwriter and sound engineer, Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has warned the public against putting their wards in boarding schools.

Sylvester Oromoni, a pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, was recently announced dead under controversial circumstances, after his cousin alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel because he refused to join a cult. This was a claim that the school authorities denied, stating that the boy complained of leg pains following an injury he sustained while playing football.

The ongoing investigation saw the state government on Friday order the indefinite closure of the school pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter. Following the order, officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Education stormed the school in the early hours of Sunday and sealed the premises.

Simi, a mother of one, responded to the incident by advising parents against enrolling their children in board school because it is a sensitive age when they require their parents’ attention and affection. According to the songstress, schools, even as small as a daycare, traumatize children, and parents need to pay rapt attention.

Reacting to the incident on her social media platform, she wrote:

Ya’ll please don’t leave your babies in this hellish schools after you notice something is off because you think it will get better or because they apologized

Even daycare, primary schools. Many of them are traumatizing children, but many parents don’t even pay attention. “They beat me too. I did not die”

Also, i’ve never been an advocate of boarding school. That age is so sensitive. They Need you. Most kids that want to go often do so for sus reasons lol and many parents do it cos they want free time. They need you. Even when they say they don’t or they’re mad at you – they need you.

They need you to be present, to be in their faces and knowing everything about them. They need to be able to come to you about everything – not just to see them 3-4 months in a year, but to each his/her own i guess.

The world is not a kind place. We have to stand in the gap for our children. Everyday. God help us.

It is painful that a child had to lose his life for these conversations to be happening…
