President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that an executive bill giving legal backing to the new minimum wage of N30,000 will soon be sent to the National Assembly.
Buhari, while addressing a joint session of the National Assembly at a 2019 budget presentation ceremony said he has set up a committee to fashion out ways of implementing the new wage.
“Let me say something about the minimum wage. I’m committed to addressing the minimum wage issue and I will be sending you a bill to that effect soon.
“However, I’m aversed to situations where the new minimum wage would put borrowing pressure on the government, which is why I’ve put in place a technical committee to work out modalities that ensure that the new minimum wage, when implemented, would not create any inflationary trend.
“That committee will also ensure that the implementation does not lead to job loss by our civil servants, thereby creating further unemployment in the economy,” he said.
