According to reports by Pitchfork, Coachella is sewing Afrochella for copyright infringement. In the lawsuit which was filed on the 5th of October, Coachella is suing Afrochella over claims that the latter is “intentionally trading on the goodwill of [Coachella and Goldenvoice’s] well-known COACHELLA and CHELLA festivals and trademarks by actively promoting music events in the United States and in Ghana using the confusingly similar mark ‘AFROCHELLA’ and by fraudulently attempting to register Plaintiffs’ actual trademarks as their own.”

Goldenvoice is one of the largest show promoters in the world and is the company behind Coachella. Markedly, Afrochella was set to hold on the 28th and 29th of December this year (2022) with top Nigerian acts namely Burna Boy, Fireboy DML and Ayra Starr as headlining acts as well as Ghanaian acts Black Sherif and Stonebwoy.
